Space and materiality 001

5th August 2019, Teacher: Sonia Gehlot

The class began with a question, What is space?

Space is a place that an object occupies. A place created with interior, furniture, lights etc.

We discussed about materials are extracted from nature, Wood, aluminium, Marble etc. There are engineered Materials as Plywood, plastic. We talked about their properties, how some materials are malleable, tensile, hard in strength, ductility, density etc.

Ma’am conducted an activity to determine why certain properties require certain material, ex: how book isn’t of metal? Because text can be easily printable, light weighted etc.

Then, we went to the workshop, where the sir showed us all the machinery and handcrafting tools such as

  • Measuring instruments
  • cutting tools
  • drills
  • scissors
  • file
  • Hammer
  • Plyers
  • Screw Drivers
  • Clamps
  • L-Key, Bolts, Nuts, spanners

We were instructed about the rules and regulation of the workshop. Sir told us about how different tools and machines are required for different materials i.e. metals and wood.

Then, we were given an assignment to create a board with natural and engineered materials.
